Alice Stephenson was the ninth child of Thomas Stephenson & Ann Wainwright born May 26th, 1887 at 42 Disraeli St, Middlesbrough & christened June 15th, 1887 at St Paul’s, Middlesbrough, Co Durham.
In 1891 Alice, her parents & 2 sisters & 2 brothers were living at 42 Disraeli St, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.
By 1901 Alice’s father had died & she & her widowed mother & sister Dorothy were living at 36 Hold St, Middlesbrough.
Alice married Harry Ridley Yarrow on June 24th, 1908 at the Parish Church, West Rounton. Witnesses at the wedding were Alice’s brother Joseph Thomas Stephenson & Arthur Walls. Interestingly it is stated on the marriage certificate that Alice’s father Thomas, deceased was a station master for N.E.R. Harry, a joiner, was born September 5th, 1885 the son of Margaret Ridley & James Yarrow, a joiner.
Alice & husband Harry were living at West Rounton in 1911 where Harry was a joiner & they had a 10 month old daughter, Margaret Annie.
Harry served as a staff sergeant in the Army in WW1 during which time he contracted malaria while serving in Salonica.
Daughter Margaret married John O Luke, a baker, confectioner & sub-postmaster, in July-September 1936 in Durham.
The 1939 register shows Harry & Alice & family living at Crosstrees, Tursdale, Ferryhill. Harry was described as clerk of works (building). Son Thomas was living in Stokesley in 1939 & working as a sanitary inspector. There is a marriage for Thomas S Yarrow to Mary Deighton in April-June 1940 in Durham. Mary, who was born in 1920, was working as receptionist at the Three Tuns Hotel, Durham City at the time of the 1939 register.
Harry of 5 Oak Rd, Redcar died on August 25th, 1950 at Crosstrees, Tursdale, Ferryhill, Co Durham. Probate was granted to son Thomas Stephenson Yarrow, clerk of works, & his effects were £5,911. 17s.
Alice died March 30th, 1952 at 5 Oak Rd, Redcar, Yorkshire. Administration of her estate was granted to son Thomas Stephenson Yarrow, sanitary inspector & her effects were £298.5s.2d.
